Don’t forget about Arenas
November 21, 2009
Alabama has so many good players, and it’s easy to get caught up in what Mark Ingram has done this season on offense and what Rolando McClain and Terrence Cody have done on defense.
But the unsung hero on this team is without a doubt senior cornerback Javier Arenas, who played his final home game Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium and went out in style in Alabama’s 45-0 rout of Chattanooga.
Arenas returned his seventh career punt for a touchdown, an SEC record, and has been one of the Tide’s best all-around defenders all season.
You could make a case for his being the the most valuable player on Alabama’s team this season with all the different things he does for this team.

Sunday Morning Quarterback: Alabama 22, Ole Miss 3
October 12, 2009
Local television news near Oxford pinned highlights of Saturday’s meeting between Alabama and Ole Miss as the “Game of the Year.”
Really?
Around here, at least: Yeah, really.
From the time it became clear that some big football analysts saw very big things this season for the Rebels, Ole Miss pointed to this game as the biggest on its 2009 schedule. And even though the top-five shine had vanished with a disappointing loss at South Carolina, Ole Miss could make things all better with an upset victory over No. 3 Alabama.
The urgency was tangible in a record crowd that turned out loud, with expectations to finally see a genuinely elite football team on their field.
Well, they did … But it was wearing white …
Alabama took all the fun out of Ole Miss’ big day, raking in a victory that was never all that close and never gave those home fans a whiff of real hope. The Crimson Tide kept the Rebels at arm’s length with a salty defense and an offense that didn’t appear to be doing a lot until you looked down and realized Mark Ingram had 172 rushing yards.
At this point, the SEC West is clearly Alabama’s to lose. Auburn’s defeat at Arkansas and LSU’s defeat to Florida means both Tigers probably need to win out to claim the division title this season.
Here’s what is really scary … Alabama doesn’t appear to have peaked yet.
Given the red-zone failures and shaky pass protection, the Tide can’t honestly say it played its best game Saturday. Each step of the way it seems (with the exception of completely overmatched North Texas), for one reason or another, Alabama hasn’t been in top form. Yet none of those games were close.
And none, certainly, were the Tide’s “Game of the Year.”
